7 Ways To Improve The Fuel Efficiency Of Your Car

With the increase in fuel prices at the pumps, people are  looking for ways to make their fuel go further more than ever. Brexit has marked the end of cheap petrol as the weak pound sends prices back up, the AA warned. The main cause of the increase is down to wounded sterling which fell sharply following Brexit and is worth 14% less against the dollar than a year ago – $1.31 now compared with $1.54 in 2015. So here are 7 ways to improve fuel efficiency in cars:

Lose Weight- If your car boot is carrying a little excess weight, give it a helping hand by lightening the load and ditching the extra luggage. Likewise, a roof rack or bicycle rack is going to slow you down.

Choose Your Air Flow- If possible, leave the air conditioning switched off as this, along with other electrical appliances, can put a strain on the engine and use up more fuel, particularly at lower speeds. However, if it’s getting a bit warm, you can significantly reduce drag by winding up the windows, closing the sun roof and switching to air conditioning.

Ease Off The Pedal- By obeying the speed limits you’re actually improving your car’s mpg. Studies have shown that reducing speed by just 10mph can use up to 25% less fuel.

Keep Momentum- Regular stopping and starting uses up more fuel so it pays to look ahead and be aware of any obstacles that might be coming up. By reading the road in advance you can ease off the throttle and keep a steady pace. This is another good reason to maintain a healthy distance between you and the car in front as you’re less likely to need to constantly brake and accelerate again.

Pump It Up- Simply keeping your car in good condition can maximise your miles per gallon. Tune up your engine and regularly check the air filter, oil and spark plugs.

Don’t Be Idle- If you’re waiting for someone or just sitting in traffic for a while, switch off the engine, assuming it’s safe to do so. Unless the weather is very cold, the best way to warm up an engine is to drive slowly until it reaches optimum temperature.

Plan Your Route- Plan journeys in advance whenever possible to avoid traffic and routes with a lot of stopping and starting.
